Background
The conference aims to explore the multifaceted aspects of religious authority in Southeast Asia, focusing on the role of Hadhrami descendants, widely known as habaib and their influence on contemporary religious practices and beliefs. The conference intends to answer some questions relating to: (1) habaib’s contribution and role in religious authority, (2) the forces/trends driving the rise of habaib in Southeast Asia, (3) this rise effect to social cohesion and religious practices, (4) the acceptance and rejection to habaib in dealing with locals ulama, (5) habaib’s engagement with social media to transmit their ideas, (6) habaib’s involvement within Muslim mass movements and organisations, and (6) habaib’s role on progressive ideas in Islam.

Submission
The conference selectively invites students, lecturers, and researchers, to submit abstract by 15 September 2023, and submit a full paper of approximately 6000-8000 words by 10 October 2023. The participants will present their paper at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya on 17-18 October 2023. The selected papers will be peer-reviewed and published as a book chapter in an edited volume published by ISEAS.
